My personal commitment to Lebanon has been essentially through knowledge and education, the pillars of Lebanon`s future. Rooted in this belief, I returned home shortly after completing my PhD in France. Lebanese cities are among the most famous names in ancient history and the majestic ruins still testify to the greatness of the people who lived in this country. The nature of Lebanon makes it the only country in the Arab world that spans four seasons a year. No matter the season, there is always something special to enjoy. In winter, ski resorts offer tourists slopes comparable to the best ski resorts in Europe. During the summer, international festivals across the country in Baalbek, Byblos, Beiteddine, Batroun and Jounieh bring together Lebanese and foreign artists to perform at stunning archaeological and historical sites. However, the Lebanese economy has been hit hard by the Syrian civil war. The Institute of International Finance forecasts GDP growth of just 0.7% for 2013. Lebanon also suffers from a very high level of public debt, the third highest in the world in terms of debt-to-GDP ratio. As a result, interest payments absorbed 48 per cent of government revenues in 2016, limiting the government`s ability to make necessary investments in infrastructure and other public goods.
